Plenty of NBA analysts picked Greg Oden, who was the first pick of 2007 NBA Draft but didn’t play because of injury, to be the Rookie of the Year for the 08-09 season.
However, as of right now, Rider alumnus Jason Thompson of the Sacramento Kings has had a more productive season than Oden. Thompson is averaging 11 points, seven rebounds and almost a block per game while playing in every contest this season, starting in a majority of them. Oden is averaging nine points and eight boards and a block per game for the Portland Trail Blazers, but he has also missed more than 20 games this season.
Thompson has finally been able to get some recognition as he was named to the all-rookie third team by David Thorpe, an analyst for ESPN. Thorpe also says that Thompson is a “likely breakout candidate” for next season. Hopefully, next year the Kings won’t again own the worst record in the NBA so the former Bronc can get some face time on ESPN.
