Smoking building
Smoked out. On Aug. 30 at 11:22 a.m., Public Safety was dispatched to the BLC for a fire alarm. Upon arrival, the building was being evacuated. Upon further investigation into the cause of the alarm, smoke was found in the ground-level elevator machine room. There were no signs of an active fire. Facilities Management was contacted and upon further investigation, they discovered that a pump for one of the elevators had burned out. The elevator was placed out of service, the building was deemed safe and everyone was allowed to come back in.
High winds ahead.
The aftermath. On Sept. 1, 7:15 p.m., the remnants of hurricane Ida came through the area of campus. After the end of the storms, Public Safety discovered water damage to several residence halls; House #8 (AXD), Longstreet House, Kroner Hall, Olson Residence Hall, Hill Hall and Conover Hall. Water was also discovered in the Gill Chapel Basement. The visitor’s lot and the roadway by Gill Chapel also flooded and had to be closed off. Facilities Management and C&W cleaning services were contacted to clean up the water and the roadways and visitor’s lot were open the following day after the water receded.
