MAAC announces preseason teams for 2012-13

By David Pavlak

The 2012-13 MAAC preseason teams have officially been released. Two Broncs on the women’s team have been honored by the conference.

Junior guard MyNeshia McKenzie has been named to the preseason All-MAAC second team, while senior forward Caitlin Bopp was named to the third team.

“Having MyNeshia and Caitlin named to the preseason MAAC teams is a great honor for them and our program,” Head Coach Lynn Milligan said. “Caitlin brings a true post presence, can score on the block and is a terrific rebounder. She has been a steady force within the MAAC for three seasons and her hard work is being recognized. MyNeshia is the returning leading rebounder in the MAAC. She is a double-double threat every night and can cause matchup problems.”

Nobody on the men’s side was selected as a member of the preseason teams.

Last season, the men’s squad had three members named to the preseason teams. Novar Gadson, ’11, was named to the first team, while Jeff Jones, ’11, and junior forward Danny Stewart were named to the third team.

Stewart isn’t worried about the preseason labels. He feels that the Broncs will make their presence known on the court.

“We are under the radar — we have a pretty good team,” Stewart said. “So us being the underdogs gives us something to strive for. Personally, I’m not striving for awards. I want to win games and win a championship. The rest will fall into place.”

Both Gadson and Jones have gone on to play basketball internationally since graduating from Rider. Jones is a member of Kis-Raba Menti Takarek Soproni KC, a member of the Hungary-A Division. Gadson plays for Antranik in Lebanon.

The Broncs are scheduled to have an exhibition game on Nov. 3 against Scranton in Alumni Gym.

Rider will then host Robert Morris on Nov. 9 before welcoming Stony Brook to Alumni Gym as part of the televised 6 a.m. ESPN Tip-Off tournament.
